Decision No. 367

Submission No. 181 (and Addendum) – Prohibition of Cigarette and Cigarette Tobacco Advertising on Television and Radio

Submission No. 185 (and Addendum) – Restriction of Cigarette and Cigarette Tobacco Advertising on Television and Radio

The Cabinet :-

(a) re-affirmed that as from 1 September 1976 there will be a ban on the advertising of cigarettes and cigarette tobacco on television and radio;

(b) authorised the preparation of appropriate amending legislation to the Broadcasting and Television Act to ensure that effectiveness of this decision (see paragraphs 17 and 18 of Submission No. 181); and

(c) agreed that the Minister for Health should pursue with the State Health Ministers their proposals to work towards uniform legislation to control cigarette advertising in areas where the Commonwealth has no constitutional power.
