Collections in Melbourne: A Guide to Commonwealth Records

On 7 November 1935, Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith and Tommy Pethybridge took off in the Lady Southern Cross from Allahabad, India, on the second leg of a flight from England to Australia. They were never seen again. It is believed that both were killed when their plane crashed off the coast of Burma, probably on 8 November 1935. This letter received by the authorities two months later suggests otherwise. Air Services Branch (CA 778).
