This character reference helped Poon Gooey obtain permission to return to China and re-enter Australia with his wife, who was granted permission to stay for six months in 1911. With extensions, she stayed for two and a half years, during which she gave birth to two children. When her request to stay permanently was refused there was a public outcry, but the government refused to reverse its decision, arguing that the principle of the ‘white Australia’ policy was at stake. The case ended with the quiet departure of the whole Poon Gooey family for China in 1913.
