Papua New Guinea Records 1883–1942 - Front cover
This guide is number 4 in the series of Research Guides published by the National Archives.
The records listed in this guide reflect the changes in the administration of Papua New Guinea since 1883. They cover records from the German administration of New Guinea from 1884 to 1914, the Australian Army administration of German New Guinea from 1914 to 1921, British New Guinea records from 1884 to 1906, and Territory of Papua records from 1906 to 1942.
The majority of these records were microfilmed for use in Australia and originals returned to the National Archives and Public Records Services of Papua New Guinea. This guide will be invaluable to researchers interested in the administration of this nation before independence.
Peter Nagle is a history graduate from Macquarie University and worked for the National Archives for more than 20 years. He authored the National Archives of Australia research guide Australia in Focus: Photographs in the National Archives, and co-authored the National Archives research guide Aboriginal Deaths in Custody: The Royal Commission and its Records, 1987–91.
Guides include the material known to be relevant to their subject area but they are not necessarily a complete or definitive guide to all relevant material in the collection.
The National Archives reviews its collection to confirm the value of records for research, evidential and other purposes or to identify, in consultation with agencies, records for destruction. At the time of publication all the records described in this guide were present in the Archives collection. However, it is possible that some of the records may be destroyed if they are reviewed and considered not to be of enduring value. If this occurs, the guide will be revised accordingly.
