The passenger vehicle ship Empress of Australia, with roll-on roll-off capacity, was constructed for the Australian National Line at Cockatoo Island Dockyard as ship number 220. It was laid down on 11 September 1962, launched on 18 January 1964 and completed on 8 January 1965. The Empress of Australia was the largest ship of this type in the world, being 445 feet in overall length and having gross tonnage of 12 037 tons. It was designed to accommodate 250 passengers, 51 cars and 33 semi trailers. The vessel operated between Sydney and Tasmania. Renamed Royal Pacific, the vessel sank in the Malacca Strait after colliding with a Taiwanese fishing vessel in 1991.

B A Boyle & Associates had been contracted to design and supply the hydraulically operated stern door which was manufactured by Newcastle Engineering Pty Limited. After the failure of the door during trials, new hydraulic rams, modified door structure and new gear quadrants were fitted and the door track on the ship modified.
