This guide is number 17 in the series of Research Guides published by the National Archives.
The National Archives of Australia holds a fascinating collection of sound recordings including interviews, speeches, plays, documentaries, music and sports broadcasts. These are preserved on gramophone disc, tape, cassette and CD.
The sound recordings capture important historical events such as Prime Minister Chifley's declaration of peace in 1945. They include interviews with famous Australians such as Sir Donald Bradman and sound material from the personal records of Prime Ministers. The extensive collection of ABC material includes radio and television programs and the music of Australian composers. Sound recordings relating to royal commissions, such as the 1954 Royal Commission on Espionage, are also held in the collection.
Whether you are interested in Dawn Fraser winning a gold medal at the 1964 Olympic Games, the opening ceremony of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme in 1950, the special news report of Prime Minister Holt's disappearance in 1967, and interview with Albert Namatjira in 1952, or the Holden launching ceremony in 1948, there are plenty of treasures to be found in our collection.
Guides include the material known to be relevant to their subject area but they are not necessarily a complete or definitive guide to all relevant material in the collection.
The National Archives reviews its collection to confirm the value of records for research, evidential and other purposes or to identify, in consultation with agencies, records for destruction. At the time of publication all the records described in this guide were present in the Archives collection. However, it is possible that some of the records may be destroyed if they are reviewed and considered not to be of enduring value. If this occurs the guide will be revised accordingly.
